On October 20, 2009, over 5000 Guineans and friends of Guineans came together in Washington, D.C. to march and raise awareness of the military violence that erupted in the Guinean capital of Conakry on September 28, 2009. On that day the military, under the leadership of Captain Moussa Dadis Camera who plans to stand in presidential elections next year, killed 157 people in an opposition rally. Hundreds more were injured and countless women and young girls were raped.
As a former Peace Corps volunteer who served in Guinea, this beautiful country and its people remain close to my heart. I joined fellow Peace Corps volunteers and Guinean friends on this autumn day to march for peace and to voice our concerns about these violent atrocities.
